Coming out of nowhere is the news that Richard Kelly is interested in returning to the world of Donnie Darko.
The mind bending 2001 film it rightly considered a modern masterpiece, a Sci-Fi mystery that is still scrutinised to this day and which made a star out of Jake Gyllenhaal.
While there was a sequel made a few years later, which no one really wants to talk about and those who have seen, probably want to jump back in time and forget, in a recent interview with Comingsoon.net, Kelly has surprised fans by saying that work is underway on a return to the world of Donnie, even though what and how is quite vague.
Here is what he said:
Well, I’m probably not allowed to say anything more [about a new Donnie Darko film] than there has been an enormous amount of work completed. I’m hopeful that we might get to explore that world in a very big and exciting way. But we’ll see what happens. But there has been a lot of work done. A lot of work has been done.
Even just this little snippet has got us excited, even though it does feel that the original film was a “lightening In The Bottle” moment and any further films will be hard to capture that same essence.
We just have to wait and see.
