Who doesn\’t love Gremlins?
After all these years, the much loved classic,still entices a new generation of fans and while there is still hope that one day we will finally get to see a third Gremilns film, the original is still a must watch movie, during the festival season.
Fans have their own favourite scenes from the movie, from the first appearance of Gizmo, that infamous microwave scene to of course the “Flasher\”….and countless more.
But its one particular scene that strangely does not concern a Gremlin that stands out as the most darkest moment of the film.
A story that is so horrific and out of place, especially in what many consider a “children’s film\”, that it actually becomes an introduction and the first steps for the young watching into the horror genre.
Its when Kate (Phoebe Cates) explains to Billy why she hates the festival season and it\’s become a much cherished dark moment and a rightful entry into our classic scenes feature.

BILLY: What are you talking about?
KATE: The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas, it was so horrible. It was Christmas Eve. I was nine years old. Me and mom were decorating the tree, waiting for dad to come home from work. Couple of hours went by, dad wasn’t home, so mom called the office. No answer. Christmas Day came and went, and still nothing. The police began a search. Four or five days went by. Neither one of us could eat or sleep. Everything was falling apart. It was snowing outside. The house was freezing, so I went to try to light up the fire. And that’s when I noticed the smell. Firemen came, broke through the chimney top. Then me and mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird, and instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He’d been climbing down the chimney on Christmas Eve. His arm was loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck, died instantly. And that’s how I found out there was no Santa Claus..

This scene pulls you right out of the film, and I wonder if it should be there at all!
Dante does have form with this as he did something similar in the brilliant The Burbs.
I don’t know…I feel it fits the dark theme of the storyline, it’s amazing that it’s considered a kids film when in truth it’s not.
