Despite negative reviews and the first film of the franchise to divide the fan-base, SCREAM 7 is a box-office smash, taking over £200m worldwide and while we never liked the entry here on Hacked 2 Pieces, the success does mean that a SCREAM 8 is already in development and while fans were delighted to see the original final girl back in the shape of Neve Campbell, there were those who were disappointed that Melissa Barrera did not return.
The reason is well documented – Barrera was fired for social media criticizing the Israeli government’s killing of Palestinian civilians, and comparing Gaza to a concentration camp. Furthermore she posted fundraising links to Palestinian human rights organizations and shared articles by Holocaust scholars accusing Israel of committing genocide.
Those behind SCREAM did not take too kindly to those posts and fired Barrera – causing a chain that eventually changed Scream 7 into a total different movie and creating a divide with many fans in support of Barrera and her comments.
Now speaking in a interview with VARIETY, Barrera has finally broken her silence on her sacking with comments that has stunned fans – some offering more support, while others wondering has she gone to far.
First she agreed with the interviewer that Scream 7 “sucked,” – but also added her thoughts on the box office takings with the words “I think they lied about the numbers,” and adding “I don’t think it made that much money.
Also when pressed by VARIETY about her co-stars if she felt like her former co -stars were “basically crossing the picket line” and were “scabby,” Barrera said, “Oh, one hundred percent. I think they all are. And they have to live with that. The only way they were able to make that movie after what happened was to nostalgia-bait as much as possible.“
The comments has already ignited discussions among SCREAM fans and either way if you agree or not, we can be sure that Barrera is done with the franchise and any hope of the return of the Carpenter sisters is all but gone.
